[Pluto-help] 2 problemi: scsi e debian (lungo)

Sono ancora io che rompo le scatole...

Primo problema: il riconoscimento della scheda scsi e dello scanner scanwit
Su una lista dedicata allo scanner mi è giunta questa mail.
Dato che sono un po' bestia in inglese e che per giunta di scsi so ben poco
la copio qua paro paro, sperando che qualcuno abbia il tempo di leggerla e
spiegarmi qualche dettaglio...

	Definitely try a terminator (active are best). Linux is more
sensitive to 
SCSI chain misconfiguration than Windows. Also, see what messages appear in 
your logs (probably var/log/messages or /var/log/sysog depending on your 
distro) after scanning fails. Does Linux see the scanner (on /dev/sg0 or 
similar). Do you have access rights to /dev/sg0 (or your scanner device).
Try 
to chmod it +rw for all users.
	Also note, what messages are printed by the SCSI driver when the
kernel 
boots. Any errors? Type dmesg, if you don't feel like rebooting. (**)
	How did you compile your scsi? As modules? Do a /sbin/lsmod and see
if 
scsi.o, sg.o and atp870u.o are loaded. If you compile your own kernel, you 
might at first try to compile them into kernel, not as modules - one less 
thing to worry about, after you get it to work you can always modularize.
Also see the atp870u documentation for any parameters you might have to pass

to the scsi driver at boot (you might have to limit bandwidth or disable 
sync). SCSI is like black magic, not exact science ;-)
	I had similar problems with a SCSI external ZIP+ drive. Worked in
Windows, 
not in Linux. Unfortunately, only thing that helped was to change SCSI 
adaptor to an Adaptec 2940. BTW, newer kernels have two adaptec (aic7xxx) 
drivers - old and new. New one is supposed to be better, but old one is less

picky about bad SCSI devices - my ZIP works only with old driver (but
ScanWit 
and my DVD work on both).
	If you decide to buy another SCSI card, buy it from a shop that lest
you 
return it if it doesn't solve your problem. You might try a cheap Tekram 
DC310 (better 310 than 315) - they work fine in Linux and cost much less
than 
Adaptec. remember also, that most SCSI adapters (unlike Acer's) have the 
high-density connector, so you'll need an adapter plug to connect your 
scanner.

In merito allo stampare i messaggi al boot (nota **), l'avevo fatto e li
avevo anche mandati qua su Pluto: sembra che lo scanner sia riconosciuto...

Stasera quando andrò a casa cercherò di mettere in pratica tutti i
suggerimenti di cui sopra, ma nel frattempo c'è qualcuno che leggendo il
tutto mi può suggerire qualcos'altro?


Problema due (l'avevo già postato ieri senza risultato,nel frattempo ho
cambiato l'HD ma non è successo nulla)

Ho un PC 486DX 120MHz, 32 Mb EDO RAM, HD 603MB Conner (ide1 master), CD-Rom
ATAPI (ide1 slave), HD 203 Mb Conner (ide2 master)
Avvio il pc con un disco DOS, dopodichè lancio la procedura di installazione
di Debian da CD (file boot.bat).
Parte, decomprime il kernel, comincia a sfilare messaggi e ad un certo punto
si inchioda dicendo:
"Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00"
Qualche idea?
Per inciso, c'è un modo qualsiasi di intercettare i messaggi prima che si
inchiodi, onde poterli eventualmente visionare con più calma, visto che
mentre scorrono sullo schermo ci vorrebbe la vista di Superman per leggerli?

Se nessuno è morto leggendo tutto ciò, vi ringrazio infinitamente per ogni
anche piccolo suggerimento
