Dunque premetto che io uso kernel 2.4 e RH9 ma cmq ho avuto pure io lo 
stesso identico problema...
Nn credo servisse ricompilare i drivers, molto semplicemente devi creare 
i device nodes nel dev file system (il messaggio che ti danno le utility 
di ALSA direi che è esplicativo, come sai tutti i device in Linux hanno 
una rappresentazione nel dev file system, i dischi EIDE per esempio sn 
/dev/hda /dev/hdb...etc quelli SCSI sda, sdb...etc, le schede sonore 
ovviamente non fanno eccezzione). Per creare le entryes  nel dev file 
system devi lanciare lo script "snddevices" che si trova alla radice dei 
sorgenti del driver che ti 6 compilato...
Dopodichè dovresti essere in grado di usufruire dei tools di ALSA: 
alsaconf, alsamixer...mi raccomando alza il volume perchè se nn ricordo 
male di default è abbassato...
TI RIPORTO DI SEGUITO UN EXTRACT DEL FILE INSTALL CHE TROVI SEMPRE ALLA 
RADICE DEL DRIVER CHE HAI SCARICATO...penso parli da se quindi evito di 
dilungarmi pongo l'accento solo sulla nota finale...
mi raccomando alza il volume del mixer, poi se nn ricordo male devi 
anche copiare il servizio di alsa in init.x dove x è il numero del 
livello d'avvio.

6) Run the './snddevices' script to create new sound devices in /dev 
directory.
   Skip this step, if you have a kernel with the DEVFS support.
7) Edit your /etc/modules.conf (see the kmod support section below).
8) Run 'modprobe snd-xxxx' where xxxx is the name of your card.
   Note: All ALSA ISA drivers support ISA PnP natively, so you don't need
         isapnptools any more.  Don't use both together.  It will
         conflict.  For disabling the ALSA ISA PnP support, specify
         --with-isapnp=no configure switch.

You can also look at the utils/alsasound file. This script is designed for
the RedHat distribution, but it can be used with other distributions which
use System V style rc init scripts.

Note: All mixer channels are muted by default. You must use a native
      or OSS mixer program to unmute appropriate channels (for example a
      mixer from the alsa-utils package).

Note: This document notices the /etc/modules.conf file. Many current
      distributions uses the old /etc/conf.modules file. Both names are
      valid.
