[Pluto-help] make menuconfig

Ciao a tutti,
                 ho la necessità di riconfigurare il kernel (RH7.1) ed ho
scoperto che è necessario lanciare i seguentio comandi:

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

A questo punto compare un menu nel quale si può decidere quali moduli
integrare nel kernel.
Il problema è che poi non so come procedere.
Devo ricomplilare il kernel?
Devo fare prima una copia del vecchio Kernel?
Posso ricompilare stando in ambiente XWindow?
Devo cambiare la configurazione di Lilo?
