[PLUTO-help] problemi nella compilazione del kernel - debian

Ciao a tutti,
vi espongo un problemino che si è improvvisamente verificato, anzi, una 
serie di problemini... :-)
1) quando sono in /usr/src/linux non mi accetta make xconfig col 
seguente messaggio di risposta:
*
* Unable to find the QT installation. Please make sure that the
* QT development package is correctly installed and the QTDIR
* environment variable is set to the correct location.

make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

2) non mi acectta make menuconfig se non glielo dò da root, ma tutti gli 
howto che ho trovato dicono di darlo da user normale! (sarà una 
questione di permessi, ma non so bene nè come ovviare nè tantomeno 
perché si sia verificata una cosa simile)

3) non mi accetta la compilazione "Debian-way":

debian/rules:1637: *** Error. I do not know where the kernel image goes 
to [kimagedest undefined] The usual case for this is that I could not 
determine which arch or subarch tihs machine belongs to. Please specify 
a subarch, and try again..  Stop.


la cosa sconcertante è che da questa stesa macchina ho già compilato in 
precedenza almeno tre volte con questa procedura e non capisco cosa sia 
successo :-(


Qualcuno avrebbe qualche indicazione da suggerirmi, per favore?
