ipoteticamente sì, ma ecco che siamo tornati al punto in cui ero due
settimane fa, e per cui ero passato, mio malgrado, a genkernel :-/

questi sono i passi che ho effettuato:

1) dopo make modules_install ho dato:
cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/gentoo-alsa

2) poi ho proceduto a modificare grub.conf, eccolo:
title=gentoo-alsa
root (hd0,0)
kernel /gentoo-alsa root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192
real_root=/dev/sda3  doscsi vga=791 splash=silent

title=Gentoo Linux (2.6.19-gentoo-r5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.19-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0
init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3  doscsi vga=791 splash=silent
initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.19-gentoo-r5

3) questo è l'errore che ottengo:

UDF-fs: No partition found (1)
No filesystem could mount root, tried: ext3 ext2 squashfs vfat iso9660 udf
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on

4) ho fatto il tentativo (prima di questo grub.conf) di averlo così:
title=gentoo-alsa
root (hd0,0)
kernel /gentoo-alsa root=/dev/sda3

l'errore generato è:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)

per questo tipo di errore ho provato a modificare grub.conf rispetto ai
tuoi suggerimenti cambiando la riga del kernel per renderla uguale a
quella del kernel funzionante

devo dire che è abbastanza frustrante seguire il manuale (o i consigli
che lo rispecchiano) e non ottenere il risultato sperato :-(
