Hey all!
Well, we've just went thru a few days of package freeze for
LFS-Unstable, just to see what's what, and it looks like basically the
entire unstable is capable of moving to testing at this time. Here's
the current list of changes since LFS-Testing was frozen for the 6.0
printing:
Package Updates:
automake-1.9.3
binutils-2.15.92.0.2
findutils-4.2.3
gcc-3.4.2
glibc-20041011
iana-etc-1.02
iproute2-2.6.9-041019
lfs-bootscripts-2.2.3
libtool-1.5.10
linux-2.6.9
linux-libc-headers-2.6.9.1
man-1.5o1
man-pages-1.70
shadow-4.0.5
udev-042
zlib-1.2.2
Comments: If you ask me, every one of these is a no brainer, they can,
and should go in to unstable. I don't anticipate anyone having a
problem with this.
New Packages:
Addition of Hotplug
Replacement of Sysklogd with Syslog-NG
Comments:
Hotplug was a bone of contention a while back, partially because the
package was still somewhat immature, and partially because it was felt
it wasn't truly needed. However, as the development of the Kernel and
Udev have progressed, Hotplug has become more and more necessary...it's
now pretty much expected to be there for proper operation of Udev. The
package has also matured quite a bit. It's still not perfect, and
there will still be some occasions where manual loading of kernel
modules is necessary, but I feel hotplug is ready to be included.
Replacing Sysklogd with another logging package has been discussed off
and on for quite some time. The decision was made to test Syslog-NG in
unstable a while back, and it has proven to be an acceptable
substitute. Sysklogd is an unmaintained project, and I feel if at all
possible, LFS should stick to software that is actively maintained.
Downside: it does come with an extra library dependency (libol).
However, libol and syslog-ng are both very short compiles, so build
time will not be increased that much.
Build Method changes:
The biggest change in the build method between LFS-6 and Unstable is
the dropping of Udev from chapter 5. Later versions of Udev did not
play nicely with being installed to /tools, and it was found that
chapter 6 of LFS only required 6 device nodes to be created. So, the
decision was made to drop udev from chapter 5, and instead of running
udevstart in chapter 6, create these 6 device nodes into the ramfs
mounted to /dev. Then, when udev is built at the end of chapter 6,
udevstart is run to create the rest of our device nodes in /dev.
At this time, I am proposing that all of these changes be migrated from
LFS-Unstable to LFS-Testing. I welcome the community to discuss these
changes here on LFS-Dev, but I ask that those discussions stay with the
technical aspects, not emotional in nature. Once an adequate time has
passed for the community at large to provide input on this issue,
Matthew or Gerard can make a final determination.
Thank you for your time in reading!
Jeremy
