Qualche miglioramente l'ho ottenuto. Ora per lo meno non mi risponde piu' con 
'command not found' o 'No such file or directory', ma rimane il fatto che il 
servizio non ne vuole sapere di partire mah... nonostante 
il mio syslog affermi con certezza :

(cron) session opened for user root by (uid=0)
/USR/SBIN/CRON[945]: (root) CMD (root /etc/init.d/ssh start)
.....
/USR/SBIN/CRON[963]: (root) CMD (root /etc/init.d/ssh stop)

...e il netstat affermi l'esatto contrario.
