Un saluto australe si estende a Hugh ed ai partecipanti della lista :-D ;
in ogni caso, "appiccico" qui sotto un centinaio di righe di questo
HOWTO tradotto e sorgente in Inglese. Quattro caveats qui sotto, prima
del codice.
1. (Line 83 - 105 in sorgente) "Copyright and Licence" mantenuto
invariato per coerenza con la versione 2003 tradotta da Maurizio
Fantino, dove tale sezione non viene tradotta.
2. (Line 133-134 in sorgente) Rimozione da "Feedback/Domande/Supporto"
della frase riferente agli errori ortografici per coerenza: la lingua
madre dell'autore non è l'Italiano. Immagino spetti a me inviare
correzioni dell'Inglese all'autore.
3. Caldeggio ancora l'accettazione del termine "sostegno (sostenere)"
come sinonimo di "Supporto (supportare)" benché mi sia attenuto al
termine "supporto" per ora, e del termine "elaboratore" come sinonimo di
"processore".

utile per risparmiare elettricità ed abbassare la temperatura del CPU e

controllo termico presenti nella cassa/sul dissipatore del CPU).

<title>Introduzione</title>

<title>Basi sulla modalità risparmio energetico dell'Athlon</title>
<para>
Il segnale HLT usato dal normale ciclo inattivo del kernel Linux,
normalmente non conduce ad alcun significativo risparmio di energia sui
processori della famiglia Athlon/Duron (d'ora in poi riferiti come
processore Athlon). Per ottenere un risparmio energetico reale con un
processore Athlon, bisogna mettere il processore in modo STPGNT (Stop
Grant Mode). Usando questo modo, il processore è disconnesso dal
front-side bus (FSB) e può spegnere alcune parti del CPU come pure
ridurre il clock per risparmiare energia.

Certe schede madri/chipset moderni supportano anche una funzione che
crea un STPGNT quando viene individuato un segnale HLT.

<title>Basics on the Athlon Power Saving Mode</title>
<para>
The HLT signal which is used by the normal idle-loop of the Linux kernel
doesn't normaly bring any significant power-saving on processors of
the Athlon/Duron
family (hereafter referred to as Athlon processors). To get real
power-saving on an
Athlon processor, you have to put the processor in the STPGNT-Mode
(Stop Grant Mode).
In this mode, the processor is disconnected from the front-side bus
(FSB), and can
turn off parts of the CPU as well as reduce the clock to save power.

Some modern Motherboards/Chipsets also support a Function to make a
STPGNT when a HLT signal is detected.
